According to U.S. Census Bureau population figures, Pearland is the 15th fastest growing city in the U.S. compared to other cities with a population of 10,000 or greater. Pearland is currently the third largest city in the Houston MSA; it is larger than Sugar Land, League City and Missouri City.
More than 45% of the population has a Bachelor’s Degree or higher versus the 27.9% U.S. average. Pearland has a higher median household income, $85,985, than Fort Bend and Harris County.
The City of Pearland is less than 20 Miles south of downtown Houston and the Texas Medical Center. Hobby Airport is northeast of Pearland.
Medical research and manufacturing companies are relocation to business centers near Shadow Creek Ranch. Cardiovascular Systems Inc. opened a facility in 2011 and Merit Medical Systems is construction a new facility next door. Kelsey-Seybold is building a 170,000 square-foot administrative office building on Shadow Creek Parkway.
To provide residents with a quality lifestyle, the City of Pearland is working on numerous projects totaling over $162 million. The projects target thoroughfares, drainage, public safety, library expansion, parks and recreation facilities. A new public safety building, housing Pearland’s police department, municipal court, jail, and a Brazoria County tax office, is on Cullen north of Fm 518.
Thanks to grassroots efforts by the Friends of Pearland Westside Library, Brazoria County and the City of Pearland have approved a 6,000-sq.-ft.-space in the H-E-B shopping center at Business Center Drive and Memorial Hermann Drive for a new Westside library. Pearland plans to open the Westside Library in early 2013.
The newly opened Pearland Fire Station 5 on Kirby Drive near Pearland Town Center serves the area west of Texas 288. Station 6 is located in Lakes of Savannah on Texas 6.
Construction of a $3.5 million soccer complex on Max Road of Cullen Parkway started in late 2012. Phase One includes six fields; four of the fields will be multi-purpose. The City of Pearland plans to have the fields ready for play in 2014.
Pearland’s recreation center and natatorium (NAT) is located on Bailey Road at Veterans Drive. The 2-story recreation center contains a double height competitive gym with a raised 4-land running track around the perimeter, an 8-lane 50 meter completion pool, a studio, aerobics center, cycling and weight rooms and a drop-in child-care area.
Antiquing enthusiasts will find plenty of shops in Old Town. Old town is being re-developed as a district with home, offices, businesses, service companies, recreational and public facilities. Alvin Community College/Pearland Center is located in the historic C.J. Harris Elementary School on FM 518/Broadway east of main street.
There are more than 30 churches in Pearland representing most denominations and spiritual interests, including the Sari Meenakshi Temple, one of only two Hindu temples in the Houston area.
City Hall, Independence Park, the main library, post office, police and fire stations are located east of Pearland Parkway. The Pearland Chamber of Commerce, one of the largest chambers in the greater Houston area, is located in Commerce Center in Midtown.
