The Woodlands Counted Who Walked the Waterway Lights. This December, Those Crowds Get Fireworks.

Two Decembers ago, the Waterway had a light trail. The Woodlands Township called it Waterway Wonderland. It turned on every night at 5 p.m., ran from Town Green Park to the Waterway Marriott, and had music along the path. Vendors set up at South Plaza on select Friday and Saturday evenings. It made for a pleasant walk, and that was the whole event.

This December, the same water gets a seven-minute fireworks show at 8:55 p.m. on three Friday nights, plus live music at Waterway Square. It's free. The change came from numbers the Township had been tracking for two years. Pathway traffic and trolley ridership rose during the lights, and the board voted to add fireworks and live entertainment to the program.

Three seasons on the same stretch of water

The holiday lights on the Waterway have changed every year, and each version has asked a little more of the corridor.

2024, Waterway Wonderland. A light trail with nightly music, open from 5 p.m., running Town Green Park to the Waterway Marriott through Jan. 5, 2025, according to the Township's December 2024 bulletin.

2025, Holiday on The Waterway. A new name and a much bigger display. Woodlands Online described it as a "new addition" to the holiday ceremonies, with a 1.5-mile run and more than one million lights. The Township's 2025 event page lists it as a free installation stretching from Waterway Square toward Grogan's Mill Road.

2026, Holiday on The Waterway plus Waterway Winter Nights. The lights come back from Nov. 21, 2026, to Jan. 3, 2027, with three Friday evenings of music and fireworks added on top. Visit The Woodlands calls the series new this year.

What the board saw before it said yes

The Township board approved the fireworks at its Aug. 20, 2026, meeting. Chief Operating Officer Dr. Chris Nunes presented the proposal. According to the draft meeting minutes, he "shared data reflecting increased pathway traffic and trolley ridership during the program over the past two years."

"...a proposal to add a three-night fireworks and entertainment series, funded by Visit The Woodlands at a cost of $55,000, as part of the Holiday on The Waterway program."

The Visit The Woodlands board had already approved the funding before the Township voted, and the Township motion passed unanimously. The minutes frame the fireworks as an extension of the lights program, not a separate festival. That explains the format. Waterway Winter Nights is built for people already strolling the lights. It runs two hours on a Friday and ends with fireworks five minutes before 9.

The season now builds toward the Waterway

With fireworks on the Waterway, the familiar holiday events start to look like one season instead of a scattered list. The opening weekend packs in a lot.

The Woodlands Ice Rink opens Friday, Nov. 20. The Visit The Woodlands rink page lists the $15 two-hour session with skate rental included. The next day, Saturday, Nov. 21, is the busiest single date of the season. The Lighting of the Doves runs 3 to 8 p.m. at Town Green Park, with live entertainment on two stages and craft activities with The Woodlands Children's Museum. On the Celebration Stage, Cold Shot plays at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., Santa arrives by sleigh down the Waterway, followed by the dove lighting and fireworks. Bring a card or exact cash for the snow slides. The $5 wristbands are sold on site, and the Township notes that no change is given for cash. Holiday on The Waterway opens the same day, so the doves and the Waterway lights share an opening date.

December has its own back-to-back pair. The Pavilion's free Holly Jolly Jingle, featuring Conroe ISD student musicians, is Thursday, Dec. 3, according to The Pavilion's 2026 season announcement. No start time has been posted yet. The first Waterway Winter Night follows the next evening.

Planning a Winter Nights Friday

Each Winter Night runs 7 to 9 p.m. at Waterway Square. The music mixes popular hits and holiday favorites, but the performers haven't been announced yet. Visit The Woodlands is sponsoring the fireworks, and they go up over the Waterway at 8:55 p.m., weather permitting. The listing suggests bringing lawn chairs and blankets. Food and drinks come from on-site vendors, including Sorriso Modern Italian Kitchen. All entertainment and fireworks depend on the weather and could change.

Market Street's light show runs every hour until 9:30 p.m. That means an early evening on Market Street still leaves time to reach the Waterway before the fireworks. Along the Waterway itself, the free Town Center Trolley runs the corridor, and swan boats can be rented through Riva Row to see the lights from the water. The Township's ridership numbers came from that trolley.

Two new dinner addresses beside the fireworks

This year the restaurant row facing the water has filled in, too. Hello Woodlands reported that Bari Ristorante opened Sept. 30 at 24 Waterway Ave. At 25 Waterway Ave., Community Impact reported that Bar Bludorn had moved its planned opening to Oct. 2. It's worth calling ahead before you build a Friday around it.

Both restaurants sit on Waterway Avenue, which makes dinner before the 8:55 p.m. fireworks an easy plan. Pick a 6 p.m. reservation on Dec. 4, 11 or 18, finish around 7:30, and you'll arrive while the music is going and before the crowd settles in for the finale. Waterway Winter Nights has only three dates this year, so book early if you want one of those Fridays.

Our team keeps an eye on these changes because they're part of what living here feels like, from a light trail that kept drawing crowds to a Township board approving fireworks to match.
